Shillong: Mawkyrwat Police arrested a 22-year-old man in Surat, Gujarat, on June 23 for allegedly driving a local woman to suicide. Sachin Nishad, who is from Uttar Pradesh but worked in Gujarat, faces charges after the victim died on April 19.
Investigators tracked Nishad down at 2:30 PM. He confessed to blackmailing the woman with her own photos and videos on WhatsApp and Instagram. Inspector J.B. Lakiang led the team that made the arrest.
The victim’s sister, Balapynhun Nongrum, filed the formal complaint that sparked the manhunt. Authorities booked the suspect under the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita and the IT Act. Nishad remains in custody awaiting transfer to Meghalaya.
Police seized his phone for digital evidence. Officials now urge others facing similar threats to reach out for help instead of losing hope. Superintendent of Police B. Jyrwa stated, "Victims can contact Emergency Police Assistance at 112, Cyber Crime Helpline at 1930, Women Helpline at 181, District Police Control Room at 84158-86486, or District Mental Health Helpline at 96128-89267."
