Guwahati: Police arrested Bapan Sarkar on Saturday after he faked his way into a teaching job. Sarkar lived in Shishubari village. He used a bogus appointment letter to start work as an assistant teacher at Ulubari Middle English School on June 5. The paperwork falsely claimed to carry the signature of Bijni MLA Arup Kumar Dey.
Local media reports tipped off officials to the scam. The Chirang District Education Officer opened an inquiry on July 9. The investigation confirmed the document was a complete fabrication. State BJP member Rintu Kumar Das and his colleagues filed an official FIR at the Bijni Police Station the next day.
Officers from Bijni and the Boro Bazar Police Outpost moved in on Saturday morning. They pulled Sarkar from his home to face the music. He is now cooling his heels at the Bijni Police Station while investigators hunt for the source of the fake documents. Authorities want to know if anyone else helped him pull off the fraud. As one official noted during the investigation, "The appointment letter submitted by Sarkar was fraudulent." Police continue to dig into the case.
