Aizawl: Authorities in Mizoram arrested eight women on Wednesday for trafficking heroin worth an estimated Rs 70 lakh. The operations took place in the eastern Champhai district, a vital transit route for traffic moving toward the capital city of Aizawl.
Most of the seizures occurred during routine vehicle inspections at the Khankawn check gate. Police intercepted several suspects throughout the day, finding contraband hidden in clothing and personal luggage. In one notable instance, officers discovered 180 grams of heroin valued at Rs 36 lakh inside a travel bag belonging to 19-year-old Wesley Thangmawii during a maxicab search.
Other arrests at the checkpoint included 23-year-old Lalhriatzuali, who police said was carrying 29 grams of the drug in her undergarments. Additional suspects, including Hmangaihzuali and Lianneihmawii, were apprehended with 40 grams and 12 grams of heroin, respectively. Police noted that the drugs were concealed in various items, including socks and waistbands.
Operations expanded to the Indo-Myanmar Friendship Bridge in Zokhawthar, where officers intercepted 50-year-old Lalengmawii. Authorities recovered 36 grams of heroin from a market bag in her possession. The final arrest occurred late in the evening when police searched 24-year-old Lalkrosshlumawii and found 55 grams of heroin packed in soap cases. According to a police statement, the total haul for the day amounted to 352 grams of the illicit substance.
