Padma Shri Recipient Geeta Upadhyay Dies

Guwahati: Geeta Upadhyay is dead. The noted author and educationist, known for her work in Assamese and Nepali literature, passed away, drawing tributes from across the state. Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma confirmed the news on July 13.

Sarma praised her lifelong dedication to the classroom and the page. He highlighted her status as a distinguished literary figure who left an indelible mark on two languages. The Chief Minister took to X to share his sorrow regarding the loss.

"Deeply saddened by the passing of Smt. Geeta Upadhyay, a distinguished educationist and author who immensely contributed to Assamese and Nepali literature," Sarma wrote. Her body of work earned her high praise and formal recognition.

Upadhyay held the Padma Shri award and also received the 2026 Sati Sadhani Award. The Chief Minister offered his condolences to her family, admirers, and well-wishers, asking for peace for her soul.
