NPF Secures Victories in Nagaland Civic By-Elections

Kohima: The Naga People’s Front claimed victory in two local by-elections held on June 16, while an independent candidate captured a seat in Atoizu. The State Election Commission declared the results on Friday, marking the end of the current electoral cycle.

In Chümoukedima Town Council’s Ward-11, NPF candidate Neichü-u Kuotsu defeated BJP opponent Kezhangutuo Zhotso by 90 votes. Kuotsu secured 326 votes, which represented roughly 58 percent of the ballots cast. Meanwhile, in Wokha Town Council’s Ward-8, NPF candidate Ar. Aling Lotha won by a 37-vote margin against BJP representative Mhomo Humtsoe.

Atoizu Town Council saw a different outcome in Ward-9, where Independent candidate Inaka Z. Chishi edged out NPF candidate G. Shikavi Kiba by 17 votes. The commission noted that 188 votes were cast in this ward, with only one deemed invalid.

State Election Commissioner T. John Longkumer praised the various agencies and community members who ensured the process remained peaceful. He stated, "State Election Commissioner T. John Longkumer congratulated the winning candidates and wished them success." Following the results, the Model Code of Conduct was lifted as of midnight on June 19.
