Imphal: Northeast Frontier Railway is bringing back train service to Manipur. The Agartala to Khongsang Jan Shatabdi Express and local passenger lines will run every Friday. Officials gave the green light after finishing trial runs and security checks. Ethnic violence forced a three-year shutdown on the Jiribam to Khongsang route.
The train covers 348 kilometers. It links Tripura and Assam to the Noney district in Manipur. The trip takes seven hours and 40 minutes. Before the trouble started, the line ran three days a week on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays. Now, the service is limited to Fridays. Officials noted that "operations will resume every Friday following successful security reviews and trial runs."
This track acts as a bridge to a larger goal. Engineers are pushing to finish the 111-kilometer Jiribam to Imphal line by December 2028. Work on the remaining sections continues while the 55.36-kilometer stretch between Jiribam and Khongsang stays open. The full project costs Rs 22,274.57 crore.
It will eventually link Imphal to the national grid. The finished project will include 62 kilometers of tunnels, 11 major bridges, and eight new stations. Once complete, commuters will get from Jiribam to Imphal in under two-and-a-half hours.
