Shillong: The Northeast Frontier Railway (NFR) has launched a strategic initiative to install automatic weather stations across vulnerable segments of its network. This deployment is designed to strengthen disaster preparedness and operational safety as the region approaches the monsoon season. Currently, three stations are operational, with six additional units in the final phases of installation. The project is scheduled for completion by the end of May.

Key focus areas include the Lumding-Badarpur section in Assam, the Katakhal-Sairang route in Mizoram, and the Jiribam-Khongsang line in Manipur. These regions frequently face challenges such as heavy rainfall, flooding, and landslides. By partnering with the India Meteorological Department, NFR aims to secure precise, location-specific data to facilitate proactive decision-making during severe weather events.
