Aizawl: The Union Ministry of Panchayati Raj has announced the recipients of the National Panchayat Awards 2025, with eight panchayats from North Eastern states earning national recognition for their contributions to rural governance. A total of 42 panchayats across 17 states and union territories were selected for the honors, which focus on celebrating achievements in sustainable development, sanitation, infrastructure, and community leadership under the Rashtriya Gram Swaraj Abhiyan.
Assam achieved notable success with three awards, including New Napam Gaon Panchayat being named the country's Best Gram Panchayat under the Nanaji Deshmukh Sarvottam Panchayat Satat Vikas Puraskar, which includes a cash prize of 1.5 crore rupees. Additionally, Jumarmur Gaon Panchayat earned second place in the Clean and Green Panchayat category, and Hoogrijan Gaon Panchayat took second place for Self-Sufficient Infrastructure.
Tripura also performed strongly as Sepahijala was honored as the Best District Panchayat, receiving the top prize of 5 crore rupees. Further thematic awards went to Kanchanbari for being a Healthy Panchayat and Baikunthapur for its designation as a Women-Friendly Panchayat. Mizoram saw Kawrthah North secure first prize in the Clean and Green category, while Sikkim's Gyalshing Omchung placed third in the Poverty-Free and Enhanced Livelihoods category.
The Ministry of Panchayati Raj noted that these awards serve to incentivize local bodies for their dedication to service delivery and grassroots development. The official award ceremony is scheduled to take place in New Delhi on June 3.
