Kohima: The Agricultural Technology Management Agency in Niuland hosted a Skill Training of Rural Youth program focused on vermicomposting. The event took place September 4 to 5, 2026, at the KingKin Vermicomposting Unit in Diphupar B. Fifteen unemployed individuals between the ages of 18 and 35 attended the workshop. It aims to turn household waste into organic manure.
Kaiho Achumi, an Assistant Technology Manager, chaired the proceedings. Deputy Project Director Avitoli K. Yeptho opened the session, urging attendees to apply the lessons to their livelihoods. "Encouraging participants to utilise the knowledge gained for livelihood generation and dissemination of agricultural technologies," was a primary goal of the instruction.
Technical training came from KingKin Vermicomposting Unit co-owners Sharong Mangyang and Dr. Limasunep Ozukum. They taught participants how to select raw materials, build beds, handle earthworms, and manage moisture. The group then broke into three teams to construct actual units using provided plastic beds and worms. This hands-on work ensures they can replicate the business on their own.
The training pushed vermicomposting as a legitimate path for self-employment. It connects the recycling of local biodegradable waste to better soil health and steady income. The event wrapped up with a vote of thanks from ATM Mlato Swu. Organizers hope these 15 youths will now spread the technology throughout the region.
