New Mother-Newborn Care Unit Opens at Assam Medical College

Guwahati: Assam Medical College and Hospital opened a dedicated Mother-Newborn Care Unit on Wednesday. The facility sits within the Department of Paediatrics Neonatal Unit in Dibrugarh. Dr. Sanjib Kakoti, the college principal, cut the ribbon. He stood alongside Dr. Pranoy Phukan and Professor Dr. Rita Bora, who leads the neonatal unit.

This unit keeps mothers and infants together during recovery. It specifically targets preterm and vulnerable babies. Officials claim the site will bolster local medical support. The hospital now serves as a Regional Collaborative Centre for Facility Based Newborn Care, one of five chosen across the Northeast.

Staff prepped for the launch with a 14-day observership program. They also wrapped up a special workshop that ran from August 19 to 22. This expansion marks a shift in hospital strategy. As the college noted, the goal is to "strengthen healthcare services for mothers and newborns."
