Guwahati: Shyamkanu Mahanta has secured new legal representation in the ongoing case linked to the death of celebrated Assamese singer Zubeen Garg. Mahanta, who remains an accused in the matter, has engaged advocate Gaurab Chakraborty to oversee his defense in upcoming court hearings.

This change in legal counsel follows a significant setback for Mahanta, as the Gauhati High Court rejected his bail application on May 29. Zubeen Garg passed away in Singapore on September 19, 2025, leading to the current judicial inquiry.

While Mahanta prepares his next legal steps, the judicial process continues for other individuals involved in the case. The Fast Track Court recently concluded hearings for four other defendants and has now reserved its decision on their bail requests. As the situation remains active, observers are waiting for the court to release its ruling, which the report describes as the next key step in the "judicial process."
