New Assam bridge collapses after heavy rain

Guwahati: A section of a newly built bridge over the Dalu River collapsed following heavy overnight rain. The wreck sits in the Sonachara area of Udharbond. Road access is gone. Residents in Sonachara, Amranagar, Satyanagar, and Sirishthal now face total isolation.

Daily travel has ground to a halt. School kids and college students cannot reach classes. Essential services remain out of reach for those trapped on the other side. Anger is boiling over in the region.

Locals blame the shoddy construction work. They claim Udharbond MLA Rajdeep Goala and department officials inspected the site multiple times but failed to fix glaring defects. People are now demanding real repairs rather than empty promises. One resident stated, "Repeated inspections alone are not enough and called for concrete action to restore connectivity and ensure public safety."

Villagers want Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma to step in. They fear the structure could fail completely and trigger a deadly accident if ignored. Authorities have stayed silent so far. No official word exists on why it collapsed or when crews will start building it back.
