Guwahati: The North Eastern Electric Power Corporation (NEEPCO) opened the gates of the Khandong Hydroelectric Project dam in Assam’s Dima Hasao district today. Officials took this step to manage reservoir levels after persistent, heavy rainfall across Dima Hasao and neighboring Meghalaya caused a significant surge in water volume.
NEEPCO issued a formal advisory to district administrations and emergency response teams to prepare for potential flooding along the Kapili river basin. Authorities warned that the release of water will likely cause river levels to rise downstream, posing a risk to nearby settlements. The corporation stated that residents in low-lying areas must remain vigilant and avoid venturing into the river or its banks until conditions stabilize.
Local administrations are currently monitoring the situation to determine if additional local alerts are required. Officials have appealed for public cooperation, urging citizens to follow all safety instructions as heavy rain continues to affect the region. In a statement regarding the safety of the public, the corporation warned: "The release of water could lead to a rise in the river's water level downstream and advised people residing near the riverbanks to avoid venturing into the river or its adjoining areas until conditions improve."
