Imphal: The Food Safety Administration of Manipur joined forces with the National Sports University in Imphal to mark World Food Safety Day 2026. Held at the university’s Multipurpose Hall, the event focused on this year's global theme: From Burden to Solution: Food Safety Everywhere.
National Sports University Vice-Chancellor Daljit Singh Chawdhary addressed the gathering, emphasizing that safe food is a fundamental right. He noted that contamination and poisoning remain significant global health threats that cause widespread illness and death. Chawdhary drew parallels between food safety and the hygiene standards established during the COVID-19 pandemic, arguing that similar vigilance should be a permanent part of daily life.
"Access to clean and safe food is a basic human right," Chawdhary stated during the program. He explained that food-borne illnesses disproportionately impact women and children while simultaneously hindering economic productivity.
Citing data from the World Health Organization and the Food and Agriculture Organization, speakers stressed the importance of compliance throughout the entire food supply chain. The event highlighted the collaborative roles that educators, scientists, and public health officials play in ensuring nutritional security. The observance concluded with an awards ceremony for winners of a student spelling bee, attended by officials from the Directorate of Health Services, the Central Agricultural University, and the Institute of Bioresources and Sustainable Development.
