Kohima: Nagaland authorities set 12 prisoners free. The Nagaland State Legal Services Authority confirmed the releases following the second quarterly Under Trial Review Committee meetings held between April and June. Officials reviewed the status of 333 undertrial prisoners and 111 convicts held in the Central Jail and ten district jails.
Committees identified 26 undertrial prisoners who met specific eligibility criteria for release. Local District Legal Services Authorities filed bail applications through panel lawyers for these individuals. While all inmates had legal representation, only 12 secured their freedom after courts granted bail.
District committees held 44 separate meetings during the quarter. They checked on inmates needing medical care or legal assistance. The review process covers 16 distinct categories, including first-time offenders, the elderly, and sick detainees. Regarding the oversight process, the organization noted, "All prisoners were found to be represented either by legal aid counsel or private lawyers."
Releases followed guidelines under Section 436A of the CrPC and the BNSS. Other cases included detainees unable to pay sureties, those held for compoundable offenses, and individuals eligible under the Probation of Offenders Act. Officials also processed files for people held beyond statutory investigation limits for NDPS Act cases or those accused of minor offenses.
