Kohima: The Nagaland government is calling a special assembly session to create the Frontier Nagaland Territorial Authority. Officials want to hand legislative powers to the new body for eastern districts. They will coordinate all steps with the Ministry of Home Affairs to ensure the move stays within constitutional lines.
State leaders urged the Eastern Nagaland People’s Organisation to call off their planned public rally and shutdown scheduled for July 10. The group announced the protest to voice frustration over the delayed implementation of a February 5 memorandum of agreement. The state cabinet met with the Eastern Nagaland Legislators’ Union today to hash out the details and speed up the process.
The government emphasized that it will not compromise on regional rights. "In undertaking this process, the state government categorically reiterates that the provisions and safeguards enshrined under Article 371(A) of the Constitution of India are sacred and sacrosanct and shall neither be diluted nor altered in any manner whatsoever," officials said in a formal statement.
State authorities also pushed the central government to hike the promised economic package from Rs 5,000 crore to at least Rs 10,000 crore. A cabinet delegation led by the chief minister plans to head to New Delhi soon. They want final guidance and approval from the Centre to keep the project on track.
