Kohima: The Nagaland Bar Association (NBA) officially rejected the stance of the Government Panel Advocates during an executive committee meeting on September 11, 2026. This move follows a September 8 statement from the Additional Advocate Generals and government lawyers who accused the NBA of overstepping its authority. The panel previously labeled the Bar’s position as “manifestly arbitrary and without any accepted standard of conduct” in a public press release.
NBA leaders stand firm. They refuse to back down. The Bar issued a formal rebuttal signed by President A Zhimomi and Joint Secretary Akum Pongen. They insist the state’s Advocate General must come from Nagaland’s own legal pool. The Association also claims the current Advocate General actively insulted the people he represents.
Disagreement runs deep. The NBA expressed shock that its own members serving on the government panel chose to oppose the collective. One member noted that the panel is “missing the forest for the trees” by ignoring the local legal fraternity to chase personal gain. The Bar is now consulting its federating units to decide how to handle the dissenting lawyers. They expect these resolutions to stick.
