Naga National Council President Adinno Phizo Dies in Kohima

Kohima: Adinno Phizo died October 8 at Bethel Medical Centre in Kohima. She was in her 90s. The NNC president passed away at roughly 7 PM. Details regarding her cause of death remain unknown.

She was the eldest daughter of A Z Phizo, the man known as the father of the Naga nationalist movement. Following his death in London on April 30, 1990, Adinno stepped up. She served as Acting President before a formal election at the Kohima Village Hall on May 12, 1990.

Adinno spent over five decades living outside of Nagaland. She finally returned to the state in April 2013 to bring home the body of her brother, Kevilevor Phizo, who died overseas. At that time, she remarked, "We are returning to our beloved homeland, after 50 years for me, and my dear brother Kevilevor is coming home to rest after 46 years."

She kept a low profile in her final years. Still, she continued to influence the political movement through written statements. During the May 16, 2026, observance of Naga Voluntary Plebiscite Day at Peace Hall in Chedema, she urged her people to stay the course. She insisted that the 1951 plebiscite, which showed 99.9% support for the Naga position, proved their status as an independent nation. Funeral arrangements for the late leader are pending.
