Imphal: The National Security Council has demoted two Naga Army officers following an extensive investigation into a tragedy at Hongbei Village on 28 March 2026. Lieutenant Mathotmi Shimray and Second Lieutenant Starling Shinglai were reduced to their next lower ranks for one year, an order that took effect on 5 June 2026.

An Enquiry Commission established on 30 March 2026 conducted an investigation to determine the cause of the event. While early reports linked the tragedy to disputes over timber and betel nut trade, investigators found these claims to be incorrect. The inquiry concluded that the situation resulted from communication failures between commanders, which caused a breakdown in the chain of command.

The Council reviewed the evidence during a series of meetings held throughout the spring. Members emphasized the need for transparency, stating, "The Council met on 21 April 2026 to review the progress of the inquiry and urged the removal of any obstacles that could delay the process of justice." A final review held on 1 June 2026 confirmed the responsibility of the two officers, leading to the current disciplinary measures.
