MLA Ram Muivah Seeks New Sports Infrastructure for Ukhrul District

Imphal: Ukhrul MLA Ram Muivah is pressing the Union Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports to develop modern athletic facilities in his district. During a meeting with Union Minister of State for Youth Affairs and Sports Raksha Khadse on May 24, Muivah proposed building a Sports Authority of India training centre and an Astro Turf football field under the Khelo India programme.

Muivah argues that Ukhrul has a strong history of producing elite footballers and athletes despite a lack of proper resources. Currently, the district, located 84 kilometres from Imphal, suffers from prolonged rainy seasons that force local athletes to train on muddy, inadequate fields. The proposed upgrades aim to resolve these conditions and transform the region into a premier sports hub for the Northeast.

To bolster the request, the MLA presented documents from the Sports Authority of India regional office in Imphal that endorse the creation of a dedicated training centre and sports complex. Minister Khadse reportedly reacted positively to the plan, acknowledging the area's significant sporting potential. Muivah believes these additions will provide essential opportunities for youth in remote hill areas to pursue competitive careers in sports.
