Imphal: Ukhrul MLA Ram Muivah has launched a push to transform his district into a major sporting hub by requesting the establishment of a Sports Authority of India Training Centre and an Astro Turf football field. He met with Union Minister of State for Youth Affairs and Sports, Raksha Khadse, on May 24 to advocate for the projects under the Khelo India programme.
The MLA formally submitted a proposal on May 23 asking the ministry to approve a new sports complex as a special public interest initiative. The proposal highlights that Ukhrul has a long history of producing top-tier athletes and footballers despite a persistent lack of adequate local facilities. Muivah believes these additions would provide young people in remote hill areas with a clear pathway to compete at national and international levels.
To support the request, the MLA cited recommendations from the Sports Authority of India North Eastern Regional Centre that date back to 2017 and 2018. Essential land documents for the proposed site have already received official countersignature from the Ukhrul Deputy Commissioner. Furthermore, the North Eastern Council has signaled a willingness to assist with necessary gap funding for the project.
Minister Khadse reportedly responded positively to the proposal, recognizing the district's significant sporting potential. Local advocates hope this initiative will finally address the infrastructure deficit and offer new opportunities for talent development in the region.
