Aizawl: Mizoram hit the number three spot in national HPV vaccination rankings. Health Minister Lalrinpuii declared the state ready to climb to first place. She spoke at the launch of the National Immunisation Day Pulse Polio programme in Aizawl. The state serves a population of roughly 16 lakh. Leaders must now meet high public expectations.
The HPV push began on February 28 under Prime Minister Narendra Modi. Lunglei district set the pace. It smashed expectations by hitting 107 per cent coverage during a 90-day sprint ending May 31. Health workers vaccinated 1,326 girls in that district alone. The original goal was only 1,243. Lalrinpuii told health officials they need to push harder. "Mizoram must continue strengthening vaccination efforts to maintain its polio-free status," she said.
India wiped out polio back in 2014. The state intends to keep it that way. Parents are turning out in droves for the Pulse Polio campaign. Effective local awareness drives are responsible for the surge. The minister praised the frontline staff for their hard work. She expects even better numbers in the coming months.
