Aizawl: K. Laltluangkima, the newly elected Rajya Sabha member from Mizoram, confirmed on Friday that he will provide issue-based support to the BJP-led NDA government. Representing the Zoram People’s Movement, Laltluangkima stated that his primary focus remains securing federal assistance for his state's flagship development schemes and the welfare of its residents.

The 62-year-old politician clarified that he and Lok Sabha member Richard Vanlalhmangaiha will maintain a neutral position in Parliament. Laltluangkima noted, "We will remain neutral members in Parliament. However, our support to the Central Government will be issue-based."

The election, which saw Laltluangkima secure 26 out of 36 votes against Mizo National Front candidate Zothansangi Hmar, proved to be a difficult ordeal. Reflecting on the campaign during a commemorative event, the MP described the process as exhausting due to significant interference and criticism. He observed that the recent contest stood in stark contrast to previous elections where incumbents faced less resistance.

This victory serves as a major milestone for the ZPM, a party established in 2017. Laltluangkima is the first member of the organization to reach the Upper House. He becomes the eighth person to represent Mizoram in the Rajya Sabha since the state became a Union Territory in 1972, joining a seat historically dominated by the Congress and Mizo National Front.
