Aizawl: Mizoram Governor Vijay Kumar Singh kicked off the annual Green Mizoram Day on Thursday by planting a Herhse sapling at the Raj Bhavan in Aizawl. Staff members from the Governor’s Secretariat joined the effort, contributing to a series of plantation events held across the state to boost environmental conservation.

First introduced in 1999, Green Mizoram Day has become a significant tradition observed every June 11. Official records indicate that the initiative has resulted in the planting of over 17.79 lakh trees since its inception. Governor Singh highlighted that while the day is a milestone, the work of reforestation must extend throughout the entire season.

The Governor emphasized that maintaining the state's healthy forest cover is essential for regulating the climate and protecting water cycles. He urged citizens to look beyond the ceremony of the day, stating, "Tree plantation should not remain a symbolic exercise." He encouraged the public to actively monitor and maintain saplings to ensure they grow into mature, thriving trees.
