Aizawl: The opposition Mizo National Front officially entered the race for Mizoram's single Rajya Sabha seat by nominating advocate Zothansangi Hmar. She submitted her papers to the Returning Officer and Mizoram Legislative Assembly Secretary Zothansanga Ralte on the final day for candidate filings.
Hmar, who works with the MNF legal cell, will face the ruling Zoram People's Movement candidate, K. Laltluangkima. The ZPM spokesperson filed his nomination on June 5. Other parties in the 40-member Assembly, including the BJP and Congress, declined to field candidates for this specific seat.
The ZPM holds a strong majority with 27 legislators, while the MNF currently holds 10 seats. Election officials confirmed the procedural timeline following the final submissions. According to the Election Commission schedule, "scrutiny of nomination papers will be conducted on June 10, while candidates can withdraw their nominations until June 11."
Polling for the seat is set for June 18 between 9 am and 4 pm, with the vote count beginning at 5 pm. Several other states, including Manipur, Meghalaya, and Arunachal Pradesh, are also holding elections for Rajya Sabha seats as part of a broader national cycle.
