Shillong: Meghalaya will head to the polls on June 18 to elect a new Rajya Sabha member. Chief Electoral Officer BDR Tiwari announced the schedule following a briefing with local political parties, noting that the election is required to fill a seat that becomes vacant on June 21.

The process officially begins with a notification on June 1. Candidates have until June 8 to submit their nominations, followed by a scrutiny period on June 9. The final date for candidates to withdraw from the race is June 11. Voting will take place at the Meghalaya Legislative Assembly between 9 am and 4 pm on June 18, with the vote count beginning at 5 pm the same evening.

Election officials have already inspected the Legislative Assembly venue and confirmed it meets all requirements set by the Election Commission of India. During the briefing, officials provided parties with extensive documentation requirements, including mandatory disclosures regarding criminal records in line with Supreme Court directives.

The election will follow the system of proportional representation through a single transferable vote. Authorities clarified that party members must only show their marked ballots to their own authorized agents. Independent MLAs are strictly prohibited from showing their ballots to anyone. Officials plan to conduct further briefings to ensure all participants understand the specific procedures for recording preferences and calculating quotas.
