Shillong: The Meghalaya government officially ditched plans to use the MBoSE Hostel in Laitumkhrah as a temporary detention site. Senior government advocate A.S. Dey confirmed this to the High Court of Meghalaya on September 29. The state now designates the Officers Quarters building as the permanent holding center for foreign nationals who finished their prison terms.
About 25 foreign nationals currently held in Shillong Jail will shift to the new facility by the end of the day. Authorities must ensure the building has all required services. The court ordered the Member Secretary of the Meghalaya State Legal Services Authority to inspect the center on October 5 and file a report.
Six Bangladeshi nationals currently in Tura Jail avoid the transfer. The court allowed them to stay there since their deportation process is underway. Travel permits for these individuals are already out. Dey told the court, "The process of their deportation is already in progress and travel permits have been issued for them."
The court remains focused on compensation for those held beyond their sentences. Officials must report on payment options by the next hearing. The case returns to court on October 8.
