Shillong: Meghalaya police arrested Sachin Nishad, 22, in Surat, Gujarat, on June 23. He faces charges linked to a cyber extortion case that drove a woman in South West Khasi Hills to die by suicide on April 19. The victim's sister, Balapynshun Nongrum, reported that the accused gained access to private photos and videos. He used this content to threaten the woman, promising to leak the images on social media if she did not follow his demands.
Officers from Mawkyrwat Women Police Station launched an investigation under the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita and the Information Technology Act. Digital evidence tracked the suspect from Uttar Pradesh to his hideout in Surat. South West Khasi Hills police worked with local officers in Gujarat to make the arrest. Nishad appeared before a local judge after his capture.
Authorities are urging victims to reach out before things get worse. The Superintendent of Police issued a warning to the public regarding the dangers of digital blackmail. Law enforcement remains active in the investigation. The Superintendent said, "Your life is precious. Help is available, and the police are here to assist and support you."
