Shillong: Authorities in Meghalaya's East Garo Hills district arrested a man on Wednesday for allegedly sharing sexually explicit material on social media. The accused, identified as Newbard M. Sangma from Williamnagar, reportedly used his Facebook account and YouTube channel to post vulgar content targeting women.
East Garo Hills Superintendent of Police SA Rynjah stated that the investigation began after police received multiple reports regarding the man's habitual online activity. Following a review of his recent uploads, investigators confirmed the content violated existing laws, leading to his arrest by the Williamnagar Police.
The department has registered a formal case against Sangma under Sections 75(IV)(3) and 79 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, along with Section 67 of the Information Technology Act of 2000. Police officials noted that transmitting or publishing such material online is a cognisable offence.
Superintendent Rynjah encouraged victims to come forward and report similar incidents through official police channels. He also highlighted that the National Cybercrime Reporting Portal is available for the public to securely lodge complaints regarding online obscenity, cyber blackmail, and child sexual abuse material.
