Shillong: A special POCSO court in Meghalaya's East Jaintia Hills district sentenced a man to 15 years of rigorous imprisonment for child sexual abuse. The court of Special Judge B Khriam handed down the sentence to Rephius Thamar on May 6, 2026, alongside a fine of Rs 50,000.

The legal proceedings stem from a case registered at the Khliehriat Women Police Station in 2019. Woman Police Sub-Inspector S Kharsati led the investigation, which resulted in the arrest of Thamar and the filing of a formal chargesheet in August 2020.

The sentencing concludes a judicial process that spanned nearly seven years from the initial police report to the final verdict. The Office of the Superintendent of Police for East Jaintia Hills confirmed the conviction, noting that the prosecution successfully proved the charges under the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences Act.
