Meghalaya Officials Seize Pointed Gourd Over Suspected Dye Contamination

Shillong: Food safety officials in Shillong seized a shipment of pointed gourd on Friday following reports of artificial color contamination. The inspection took place at a local market as part of routine government surveillance regarding food quality.

Deputy Commissioner of Food Safety D.B.S. Mukhim stated that samples are currently undergoing laboratory analysis to confirm the presence of prohibited additives. The inspection was prompted by a whistleblower in Assam who recently raised concerns about the practice of dyeing vegetables to improve their outward appearance.

Authorities intend to take formal action under the Food Safety and Standards Act if the results confirm that the produce is unsafe. Regarding the ongoing investigation, Mukhim noted: "Samples have been collected and sent for laboratory analysis."
