Shillong: The Confederation of Meghalaya Social Organisations (CoMSO) wants a reversal of a federal order forcing banks to stay open this Sunday, September 27. The Ministry of Finance issued the directive to keep public sector banks and Regional Rural Banks operational just before a nationwide strike scheduled for September 28 through September 30. CoMSO General Secretary Balkarin Ch Marak released a statement Thursday condemning the move.
Sundays serve as a sacred time for worship, rest, and family in Meghalaya. The group insists local culture must outweigh administrative convenience. They argued the government failed to consult with state officials before ignoring these local customs. "Meghalaya is not merely a geographical extension of a national administrative framework," the organisation stated.
CoMSO pushed for alternative solutions instead of forced weekend work. They suggested extended weekday hours, upgraded digital banking, and better ATM maintenance to keep services running during the upcoming strike. The group warned that ignoring these requests could force them to take further action. They demanded the Ministry of Finance, the Reserve Bank of India, and state leaders stop applying one-size-fits-all policies that ignore local needs.
