Shillong: The Meghalaya government promised to resolve the grievances of the Meghalaya High Court Bar Association and the Shillong Bar Association within one week. Lawyers are currently boycotting court work to demand the removal of Advocate General Amit Kumar. Law Minister Lahkmen Rymbui issued the pledge following an hour-long meeting between Deputy Chief Minister Prestone Tynsong and the protesting attorneys.
Government officials need time to act. Rymbui stated that decisions regarding the Advocate General require Cabinet approval because the position is constitutional. The state has asked the Advocate General to stop appearing in court for two weeks while the government reviews the complaints. Rymbui noted, "We have requested them to give us two weeks. The government will request the AG that for two weeks he will not appear in the case. Within one week, we will meet again."
Rymbui urged the Bar associations to drop their pending communications to allow for a proper review. He emphasized that the administration wants to fix these issues through talk rather than fighting. The government plans to tackle the grievances one at a time.
Opposition leader Mukul M. Sangma criticized the government for its slow response. He argued that the strike carries serious weight for the state's judicial health. Sangma claimed the government missed its chance to clarify the situation during the recent Legislative Assembly session. He reminded the administration that they must respect the separation of powers to keep the public trusting the legal system.
