Meghalaya Deputy CM Promises Investigation into Deaths of Two Youths

Shillong: Deputy Chief Minister Prestone Tynsong has pledged a comprehensive investigation into the deaths of two Hajong youths, Simanta Hajong and Prinomi Hajong. The assurance follows mounting pressure from the Hajong Students Union and community leaders who reject the police theory that the incident was a double suicide.

The bodies of 21-year-old Simanta and 22-year-old Prinomi were discovered on June 14 near a roadside cafe on the Shillong-Jowai road in Lumsohphoh. While East Khasi Hills Police initially treated the deaths as a suicide, local advocates argue the public location and the circumstances surrounding the couple raise significant questions about foul play.

Tynsong declined to discuss specific details of the case, citing the ongoing police work. He maintained that it would be inappropriate to comment further while investigators examine the evidence. Addressing reporters, Tynsong said, "I would not like to comment anything right now as the matter is under investigation."

Student unions from the Hajong and Koch communities continue to demand a transparent inquiry into what they describe as a double murder. They emphasized that both victims were employed and living in nearby housing provided by their employers, suggesting the couple had no reason to end their lives in such a visible, public area.
