Shillong: The Meghalaya Democratic Alliance-II has unanimously selected National People’s Party leader James P.K. Sangma as its candidate for the Rajya Sabha election. The decision followed a meeting chaired by Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma, where leaders from the coalition parties agreed to support the nominee.
Parliamentary party secretary Paul Lyngdoh noted that while member parties initially suggested various candidates, the coalition ultimately followed parliamentary convention by backing the NPP proposal. Conrad Sangma emphasized that the nomination represents the collective choice of the entire alliance rather than a single party.
The Chief Minister confirmed that no formal whip is necessary, as all coalition partners are already aligned in their support for the candidate. James Sangma, a former Home and Power Minister who lost his seat in the 2023 Assembly elections, expressed his gratitude to the coalition for their trust on social media. He is scheduled to file his nomination papers on June 5.
Beyond the Rajya Sabha race, the alliance reached a separate agreement regarding the upcoming Shillong parliamentary by-election. Member parties retain the freedom to contest, support other candidates, or remain neutral in that specific contest.
