Meghalaya Chief Minister Downplays Shillong Vehicle Arson Attacks

Shillong: Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma has described the recent torching of four vehicles across Shillong as isolated events. While speaking to reporters on Monday, the Chief Minister confirmed that he is waiting for a formal report to understand the full scope of the situation.

Addressing the security concerns, Sangma stated, "It appears to be isolated incidents, but I will definitely look into them." He noted that the events do not currently suggest a broader law and order crisis.

The attacks occurred simultaneously during the early hours of Saturday. Targeted vehicles included a police Mahindra Thar at Kench’s Trace Beat House, a Health Department Innova near Synod College, a NEEPCO Maruti SX4 in Mawlai Phudmuri, and a tourist taxi in Nongmensong. Each vehicle sustained varying degrees of damage to their interiors, hoods, and bodywork.

East Khasi Hills Superintendent of Police Vivek Syiem confirmed that authorities are treating the cases as linked, as the arson occurred within the same timeframe. Investigators currently believe unidentified individuals are responsible for the coordinated destruction of the four vehicles.
