Shillong: Meghalaya BJP leadership has refused to address controversial social media comments made by Mewakar Lyngdoh Pakma. Pakma, the president of the party’s youth wing, publicly suggested that protesting students in New Delhi should be shot. Despite widespread outrage, party figures including M Kharkrang and MLA AL Hek have provided no explanation or disciplinary action against Pakma.
When questioned, Hek deflected, claiming that the central government led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi is actively addressing student concerns. He avoided specific questions regarding Pakma’s remarks but stated, "An·chingni chatro chatrirang, neng·nikanirangko chagrongna nangtokenga aro uamangni neng·nikanirangko namataniara chingni daitoan ong·a." Hek also refused to confirm if Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan would face dismissal, stating only that the government will review the situation.
Meanwhile, the Catholic Bishops Conference of India (CBCI) has lashed out at the Delhi Police. Officers used tear gas and lathi charges to disperse peaceful students protesting recent exam paper leaks. The CBCI labeled these actions a direct violation of constitutional rights. They also confirmed their support for activist Sonam Wangchuk, who is currently demanding systemic reforms in the education sector.
