Meghalaya BJP Demands Immediate Salary Payments for GHADC Staff

Shillong: The Meghalaya BJP is pressuring the NPP-led MDA government to pay overdue salaries to Garo Hills Autonomous District Council (GHADC) staff. Despite being part of the ruling coalition, the party says the government ignored its commitments. Officials missed the July 10 deadline for recent paychecks. They also failed to settle 30 months of outstanding arrears.

State BJP vice-president and Tura MDC Bernard N. Marak accused the administration of violating the Tripartite Agreement. Paragraph 3.1 of the deal mandates that employees receive their wages by the first day of every month. The government failed to honor this promise. Marak warned that the failure to act on the agreement will cause further trouble for the state.

Workers are suffering. Debt is piling up. Employees struggle to pay bills or keep their children in school because the pay is missing. Some staff members now face loan defaults because they cannot meet monthly repayment schedules. Marak stated, "GHADC employee-rang uamangni kamni kri uamangni dormaharangko somoi gita man·na kraa." He insists the state government pay the owed wages without further delay.
