Shillong: A Meghalaya Legislative Assembly committee inspected several ongoing infrastructure projects across East Khasi Hills and Ri-Bhoi districts on May 26. Led by chairman Renikton Lyngdoh Tongkhar, the Committee on Government Assurances evaluated the progress at the Mawkhanu Football Stadium, the Umsawli indoor stadium and tennis court, and the water sports facility at Umtham.

Tongkhar expressed satisfaction with the pace of construction, noting that these facilities should meet their planned deadlines. He specifically highlighted the Mawkhanu Football Stadium in New Shillong, which aims to become the largest football ground in India. The project, valued at Rs 732 crore, is being executed by KPC Projects Limited and will feature a seating capacity of 40,000 people upon its expected completion in late 2028.

In the Ri-Bhoi district, the committee reviewed the development of a Rs 21-crore water sports center at Umtham. This site spans 14 acres and includes a canoe slalom course designed to boost local tourism and adventure sports. The inspection team, which included MLAs M Ampareen Lyngdoh, Celestine Lyngdoh, and Ollan Singh Suin, also noted significant road development and urban expansion taking place throughout New Shillong.
