Shillong: New media artist Jasan Waldura Bangbolgre Sangma has brought a piece of Meghalaya to the Navi Mumbai International Airport. His digital installation, Seemant, is now looping on the facility's Digital Toran screens as part of the Maha Swagat traveler experience. It is a big stage.
Sangma, who hails from Tura, specializes in generative systems, creative coding, and artificial intelligence. He specializes in mapping cultural motifs onto modern digital formats. His latest piece reimagines the traditional Gujarati toran, a beaded decoration used for greetings. He swapped beads for pixels and thread for light.
Circular screens feature luminous orbs pulsing through sequences centered on travel, the cosmos, and aviation. The patterns pull from the ornamental symmetry found in classic folk designs. Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma praised the inclusion of the work on such a high-profile platform. The leader wrote, "Happy to see the digital artwork of Jasan Waldura Bangbolgre Sangma from Tura featured in the Digital Toran as part of the Maha Swagat at Navi Mumbai International Airport."
The installation highlights the intersection of modern technology and heritage. It marks a significant milestone for the artist, who focuses on bridging ancient visual languages with the demands of contemporary, high-traffic spaces.
