Shillong: Meghalaya is preparing to host the 39th National Games in 2027, a milestone event projected to generate more than 5,400 jobs. As the largest sporting event ever held in the state, the Games will take place across Shillong, Tura, and Jowai, drawing over 10,000 athletes alongside a massive influx of spectators, officials, and support staff.

The surge in visitors is expected to drive significant growth in tourism, hospitality, transport, catering, and construction. Union Sports Minister Mansukh Mandaviya stated that the new, world-class infrastructure will benefit local athletes while fostering long-term economic development and future event hosting capabilities.

Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma emphasized that these investments align with the state's mission to become a premier sports hub. He noted that eight years of dedicated infrastructure spending are now producing tangible results for the youth. The event also holds symbolic weight as it coincides with Meghalaya’s 55th anniversary of statehood. To promote regional unity, other Northeastern states will also host specific sporting disciplines, turning the Games into a collaborative showcase for the entire region.
