Shillong: The Meghalaya Democratic Alliance-II has officially endorsed James PK Sangma as its common candidate for the state's lone Rajya Sabha seat. The decision follows a meeting of alliance leaders who reviewed several proposed names for the June 18 election. Because the coalition could not reach a consensus on a single nominee, they upheld their standard practice of supporting the candidate put forward by the National People's Party, which is the alliance's largest constituent.
Paul Lyngdoh confirmed that the nomination now holds the unified backing of every party within the coalition. Sangma is scheduled to file his official nomination papers on June 5 at 2:30 pm. Following the announcement, Sangma expressed his gratitude on social media, thanking Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma, Deputy Chief Ministers Prestone Tynsong and Sniawbhalang Dhar, and the leadership of the UDP, HSPDP, BJP, and independent members for their support.
While the alliance maintained a united front regarding the Rajya Sabha seat, members agreed to handle the upcoming Shillong Parliamentary by-election differently. Each constituent party within the MDA will have the freedom to determine its own strategy, allowing them to field their own candidates, support others, stay neutral, or abstain from the by-election entirely.
