Imphal: Tension gripped the Liangmai Naga-inhabited areas of Manipur on Friday after the Liangmai Naga Council, Manipur (LNC-M) declared an immediate Emergency Total Shutdown across all its territories, following a deadly early morning attack that left two Naga Village Volunteers dead and several others injured.
According to the LNC-M, suspected KNF-P Kuki militants carried out the attack at around 7:30 AM on 14 August 2026. The council, in a strongly worded press release issued from its Namrai headquarters, condemned the killings and said the shutdown will remain in force until further notice.
All shops, offices, educational institutions, and non-essential activities have been ordered to remain shut in solidarity. However, emergency and essential services - including medical facilities, fire services, and other emergency response units - have been kept out of the purview of the shutdown.
The LNC-M has appealed to the community to observe the shutdown peacefully and maintain discipline while extending full cooperation. It has also urged people to stay calm and united during this difficult time.
Beyond the shutdown, the council has called on the authorities to act swiftly, ensure public safety, and bring those responsible for the attack to justice.
