Imphal: Security forces have launched widespread operations across Manipur to curb escalating tensions. Authorities are conducting cordon and search missions, combing exercises, and increased patrols in the vulnerable districts of Kangpokpi, Churachandpur, and Thoubal. State police, led by Director General of Police Mukesh Singh, have established numerous checkpoints to monitor movement and ensure public order following recent armed clashes.
In Imphal, the Regional Institute of Medical Sciences became a flashpoint after protests led to the relocation of three Kuki patients on Tuesday night. Tensions at the facility grew intense enough that security personnel deployed tear gas to disperse crowds who were questioning the patients' backgrounds.
Separately, a June 16 encounter in the Henglep sub-division of Churachandpur has ignited a sharp dispute. While the Assam Rifles and the Army reported that they killed a suspected militant during a firefight and recovered an AK-47, local MLA Letzamang Haokip has disputed this account. He claims the deceased was a civilian named Lenminsang and has demanded an independent judicial probe into the incident.
Haokip expressed significant concern over the lack of transparency, stating, "The death had raised serious concerns regarding accountability and public confidence in security operations." The legislator alleged that authorities attempted to misrepresent the incident and called for the immediate return of the victim's remains to his family. Police confirmed that a criminal case is active and investigations are continuing to verify the identity of the deceased and the facts surrounding the operation.
