Imphal: Security forces engaged in a gunfight with suspected militants in Manipur's Churachandpur district on June 16, resulting in the death of one individual identified as Lenminsang Haokip. The joint operation, conducted by the Assam Rifles and the Indian Army between Molphei and Songkong villages, was launched following intelligence reports regarding armed activity.
Police stated that security forces returned fire after coming under attack, ultimately killing one suspect and recovering an AK-47 rifle along with various munitions. Official reports confirmed no casualties among the military personnel involved in the operation. Police said, "During the encounter, one suspected militant was killed. One AK-47 rifle, along with magazines, ammunition, explosives and other incriminating items, was recovered from the spot."
The incident has triggered serious allegations from local residents and officials. The Songkong Village Authority disputes the military account, claiming Haokip was an innocent civilian. The group alleges that security forces used drones and explosives during the operation and manipulated the scene by dressing the victim in military clothing after his death.
Legislator Letzamang Haokip condemned the incident, citing witness reports that suggest the victim's clothing was changed and his body removed by forces to frame the event as a militant encounter. The legislator demanded a transparent investigation, stating, "If these allegations are found to be true, it would constitute a grave abuse of authority and a serious violation of the rule of law."
While authorities continue search operations to track remaining armed cadres, officials confirmed the victim's body is being transported to Imphal. The government has yet to address the specific accusations of misconduct as the case remains under formal investigation.
