Imphal: The Appointments Committee of the Cabinet has named Manipur Police chief Rajiv Singh as the new Secretary (Security) in the Cabinet Secretariat. This high-ranking position serves as the administrative head of the Special Protection Group, the elite force responsible for guarding the Prime Minister and his immediate family.

Singh assumes the role following the tenure of Research and Analysis Wing chief Parag Jain, who held the position on an additional basis since November 12 of last year. Singh took charge of the Manipur police force during a period of intense ethnic unrest that erupted on May 3, 2023. The violence followed a protest march against the Meitei community's demand for Scheduled Tribe status, resulting in widespread displacement and at least 260 deaths.

Manipur recently transitioned back to local governance after experiencing nearly a year of President's Rule. The emergency measure began on February 13, 2025, and was officially lifted on February 4 of this year, shortly before the inauguration of a new government led by Chief Minister Y. Khemchand Singh.
