Manipur Officials Push for Better Care for the Elderly

Imphal: The Department of Social Welfare in Manipur marked the International Day of Older Persons at the City Convention Centre today. Officials demanded more dignity and social support for the state's aging population. Commissioner Haobam Roshita pushed for a new policy to boost their quality of life. She told the crowd that society must change. "She stressed the importance of ensuring that elderly people are treated with affection, listened to with patience and supported with companionship so that they can lead dignified and fulfilling lives."

Retired Director S. Saratkumar Sharma joined the call for change. He argued for dedicated health policies specifically for seniors. Director Sheikh Abdul Hakim reminded residents that help is available now. He pointed to the toll-free helpline 14567 for any elder facing trouble. The department will act on those complaints.

Data shows 1,07,000 old-age pension card holders live in Manipur today. The state operates 42 senior citizen homes to house them. The event included a Khongjom Eshei performance and gift presentations for those in attendance. Officials promised to move beyond ceremony to achieve actual results for the elderly.

Events reached beyond the capital as the District Social Welfare Office and local administration hosted an observance at the Ramrei Community Hall in Kamjong district. Roughly 100 seniors and village headmen attended to tackle issues involving financial security and social isolation.

Authorities also staged awareness programs and handed out gifts across several villages in the Phungyar and Kasom Khullen blocks.
