Imphal: Governor Ajay Kumar Bhalla and Chief Minister Yumnam Khemchand Singh honored Mahatma Gandhi today in Imphal. They laid flowers at Gandhi Memorial Hall to mark his 157th birth anniversary. The officials also attended the National Cleanliness Day Observation and Swachh Bharat Diwas 2026.
Bhalla pushed for sustained civic duty. He said the vision of a clean and sustainable Manipur must be rooted in Gandhi’s values of truth, non-violence, simplicity, self-discipline, and service. The Governor argued that cleanliness represents inner values and societal well-being. He praised progress made under the Swachh Bharat Mission but demanded more public participation.
Chief Minister Singh highlighted Gandhi’s role as the Father of the Nation. Cleanliness is a collective responsibility, he stated. The government is actively working to improve sanitation across the state. The Chief Minister pointed to a successful crackdown on littering at Singjamei Super Market. By installing CCTV and working with local police, authorities caught offenders and issued fines of Rs 5,000. "Maintaining cleanliness at Khwairamband Keithel would require strict supervision and enforcement by the police," Singh said.
