Imphal: The Manipur government has launched a series of austerity measures to address global economic challenges, following an appeal from Prime Minister Narendra Modi. During a May 29 cabinet meeting in Imphal, officials decided to reduce the size of VIP convoys, freeze foreign travel funded by the state, and implement work-from-home policies to curb non-essential spending.
Beyond these budget controls, the government finalized several development initiatives. The cabinet approved compensation for land acquisition to facilitate the expansion of the Imphal-Jiribam and Imphal-Dimapur National Highways, a move intended to accelerate road construction. Officials also authorized the extension of a water supply project funded by the New Development Bank and greenlit the Loktak Experience Project, which aims to boost tourism at Loktak Lake.
The state is also addressing workforce needs. The cabinet cleared the hiring of 173 Auxiliary Nurse and Midwife personnel and approved a two-year age relaxation for upcoming government recruitments. Additionally, the government will reorganize positions within the Manipur State Power Company Limited to improve career progression opportunities for its staff.
