Imphal: A one-day training program focused on the scientific cultivation of makhana took place on June 8, 2026, at Wangoo Nungai Loukon in Kakching District. The event, held under the Central Sector Scheme for Development of Makhana, brought together local farmers to explore modern production techniques and opportunities for increasing their agricultural income.
Dr. Kh. Premlata Devi, Senior Scientist and Head of Krishi Vigyan Kendra in Thoubal, served as the chief guest. She emphasized the nutritional benefits of makhana and urged attendees to embrace advanced farming methods to improve their yields. Progressive farmer Moirangthem Kunjakeshwor Singh attended as the guest of honor, encouraging the community to remain dedicated to refining their cultivation practices.
Kh. Malemnganba Meitei, the District Officer for Horticulture and Soil Conservation in Thoubal, presided over the session. He detailed the objectives of the development scheme, noting its goal of fostering sustainable agricultural growth across Manipur. Throughout the event, technical experts provided guidance on field preparation, pest management, and post-harvest procedures.
Dr. W. Jiten Singh, Farm Manager at KVK Thoubal, presented on the potential for expanding this crop within the region. During his presentation, he focused on the “Popularization and Scope of Makhana Cultivation in Manipur.” The program aimed to equip farmers with the necessary tools to turn makhana into a more profitable livelihood option.
